You’ve met her online a million times, on her design, lifestyle, food or mommy blog. I’ve had the privilege of meeting her in person at the Blog Your Way Studio Retreat. I met her – the modern bloggerette, I met myself 17 times over. It was magical. I was so intrigued by how much I had in common with the women present at BYW Studio, I began to wonder, what specifically makes us so alike?! Today, I can present you with a synthesis of who she is and how she works – this modern bloggerette.
The modern bloggerette loves gadgets
She has in iPhone 4s and a MacBook Pro, probably even and iMac at home. You can tell she works on the computer alot and has no time for long start up phases and crashing programs. A DSLR camera is also a standard tool. She totes around this large camera because she knows it makes the best photos. Her model is a Canon at least D60 or D600. From afar she seems to have a very intimate relationship with her smart phone. But that is only because her friends live in it!
She is 32
On average that is, she might be 26 or 42, she’s been around long enough to know where the rubber hits the road.
She’s a multitaksing genius
There is a cookie on a plate. Before you have taken a bite, chewed and swallowed it, the bloggerette has already posted a perfectly styled photo on instragam, taken pictures with her DSLR and drafted a blog entry about this cookie in her head, all that while talking to you, looking you in the eye. It’s how she rolls!
She’s a world citizen
Our bloggerette lives in France, is originally from Canada, now married to an Australia. Her father is from Rome, but she was born in Hawaii. She proficiently speaks and writes in at least two languages, or could if she wanted to.
She’s well educated
The modern bloggerette has a at least one University or vocational degree, sometimes even more. She might be a pediatrician, psychologist, journalist, PR manager or nutritionist. In the rare case she is not one of these the below point applies.
She’s a self-taught expert
Because she simply starting doing what she loves (styling, baking, writing, designing, drawing, photography, sewing…) with so much passion and enthusiasm and stuck with it, she ended up mastering skills other people have degrees in. She found that niche, that thing she likes to do just for fun, just to do it. The question what she’d do all day if she already had all the money in the world has a simple answer – it’s what she blogs about!
She’s married
The bloggerette is married to Mr. [put her blog name here], who is also well educated and supports her in every way – financially, morally, emotionally. He furthermore delivers the regular reality check when his bloggerette comes undone over mean comments or copy cats – “Is your life in immediate danger? No?! Then stop crying!”
She has an average of 1 child
For the most part that means she has either no kids or at least 2 kids.
She’s a social media genius
This lady knows what’s going on in the world of social media, she has a twitter account, linked to her facebook, where she has a fan page for her website with a veritable fan crowd. She was also on pinterest and instragram before it became cool. She is now on Tout, if you want a little heads up on what will be the next big thing in social media. The most important aspect about her social media affinity is how she uses it. She makes connections, builds a community and makes friends online who send her gifts in the mail, tell her their darkest secrets but she may never meet them in person.
She generates money
This lovely lady is getting paid by her bloggery. She is making what she used to make at “her old job” or making more money than she had ever dreamed of. In short, she is running a business, an enterprise, a brand!
Bloggerette Godmothers Holly Becker and Steffi Luxat
The bloggerette is hard on herself
The meanest comments on any blog pale in comparison to what she does to herself. She is very critical of herself and beats herself up (often unnecessaryly so). She takes 100 photos and doesn’t post one because none of them were good enough. She bakes 50 cookies and throws them in the trash because they tasted slightly different than what she was going for. In her own mind she is a perfectionist. Praise her for imperfection, dear reader, she needs to hear it from you!
She is bursting with creativity
The modern bloggerette has ideas coming out her butt, she wants to do 5 million things, preferably all in the same day. This girl, let me tell you, she is so creative, she makes the kind of stuff that result in the infamous “Why didn’t I think if this” moments.
She knows her stats
She blogs between one and five times a week. She has between 40 and 40000 daily visitors. Our blog girl knows who comes to her site, how many stay and what they are looking at for how long. She’s nerdy like that.
She’s in transition
Our blogger friend has gone through some severe changes in her life and had to face her demons. From a time of crisis she emerged floating on top, because she is creative, a doer and a problem solver. So don’t nail her to her content, she is ever evolving, taking you, dear reader, with on her journey.
The bloggerette has style
There was a time when the image of the nerd who spends “all day on the computer” was that of a lonely fat man or a cat lady. Though our bloggerette might have cats, she is anything but a cat lady. She is social, she is active, she lives in the real world and she has style! She finds, lives and sometimes even creates the latest trends.

You nailed it! How funny. How’d you do that? Freakish! I’d love to meet some of you ladies. I’m 36, full-time mom of 2 kids (want 3!), married to the smartest (and cutest) man I ever met. I live on my iphone, ipad and occasionaly dust off my macbook pro. I have multiple degrees, a BS with double major, and MS with a 4.0 (perfectionist). I studied abroad and consider myself a world traveler. And was a former marketing/pr manager (creative type) in hospitality and tourism. I multitask in my sleep. Im on twitter, instagram, pinterest, wordpress, of course facebook with a page too. I know my daily stats. I have so much I want to do and accomplish, and am constantly battling with how and when I go back to a self-directed career. And I am in a transition. I just moved in August from Brooklyn to the burbs, and this is what I blog about with a good friend of mine. All the best to you smart and chic bloggerettes!
Dani says
Wow Colleen, that is spot on in your case and don’t worry about the money making part (there is a reason I put Holly and Steffi’s picture under that point and not mind…lol), I am sure it’s in the making 😉 Big Hugs from a fellow Blog-Soul-Mate
