These are the best green beans I have ever had. I am in love. These are also the same green beans that made my “what’s-this-camoflage-around-my-steak” husband like vegetables. The most important ingredient you will need (besides the beans…duh) is Maggi Wuerze sauce. It is flavor in a bottle and the fix to all my savory seasoning problems. It’s magic – hence the name (I guess 😉 ) Though the version you can buy in the US. is not exactly the same as the one you can get here in Germany, it’s close enough. You can find it in the “ethnic” food section in the supermarket. A little background reading on Maggi is here. When I lived in California I had every visitor bring me at least 2 bottles.
Ingredients
- 750g of fresh (or a pack of frozen) whole green beans
- 4 tbsp. butter
- 2 tsp. savory seasoning (Bohnenkraut)
- Maggie (a couple of good splashes)
- 1 cup of water
Method
1. If you have fresh green beans clip the endings.
2. Melt butter in a large pan (that you have a lid for) and add the beans.
3. Place the rest of the butter on top of the beans, sprinkle with savory and splash some Maggi sauce on there. Add the water and close the lid to the pan.
4. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let simmer for about 30 minutes until beans have turned dark green and the water is gone. You can open the lid towards the end to help the water evaporate.
5. Once you are down to just butter in the pan, let the beans get a nice little frying – it add extra flavor.
This makes a great side dish for festive or everyday meals.
