Now, you all know I love the US of A. I’ve been dreaming about going there ever since I was little. The land of Charlie’s Angels and Yellow School Buses seemed to be the promised land for me 🙂 I have lived a total of 6 years over there from the east coast, to the heart land to the west coast. It is amazing. But the one thing, that really tests the limits of my US love is their measuring system – for everything – temperature, speed, distance, weight, height you name it, it’s different and converting one unit to another is a pain unless you are a human calculator. So this graphic I found on a facebook page made me giggle.
Bakers and chefs, you know it doesn’t stop there. As if cups and ounces weren’t enough the “stick” measurement was added for butter. A stick is simply the smallest unit that butter was packaged in back in the American Hay Days. It has stuck until today where butter is sold 4 sticks in a package (roughly 450grams or 2 cups). So let’s take a closer look at the anatomy of a stick of butter from a measurement perspective.
You can download the printable below in 3 different sizes and from that chart convert almost any given amount of “stick butter” into grams or cups. And I do have to say hats off to whomever made a stick of butter be exactly 1/2 cup! Remember that these are rounded numbers to give you the best estimate, again a gram more or less of butter will not tip the scales – pun intended 😉
